Yara Sallam

Egypt

Yara Sallam was awarded the North Africa Shield Award 2013 for her work in Egypt with Nazra for Feminist Studies and the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights.

After working with regional and international human rights mechanisms, Yara was Inspired by the widespread women participation in the revolution in Egypt and saw a need to support women who wanted to be active in the social and human rights sphere.

Nazra for Feminist Studies is a group that aims at contributing to the continuity and development of the Egyptian and regional feminist movement in the Middle East and North Africa, where the group believes that feminism and gender are political and social issues affecting freedom and development in all societies. Nazra aims to mainstream these values in both public and private spheres.

The Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights has been working since 2002 to strengthen and protect basic rights and freedoms in Egypt, through research, advocacy and supporting litigation in the fields of civil liberties, economic and social rights, and criminal justice.

I am a feminist. I have the right to be in the public space and the right to be safe.”
