Côte d’Ivoire is one of the few countries in Africa to have adopted specific legislation for the protection of human rights defenders, in an attempt to ensure the effective implementation of the UN Declaration on Human Rights Defenders.

Abidjan, the economic capital of Côte d’Ivoire, is a bustling francophone city, and the central Hub City for French speaking HRDs from sub-Saharan Africa. Abidjan hosts one of AfricanDefenders’ key partners, the Ivorian Coalition for Human Rights Defenders, which reunites a growing number of human rights organisations in the country, and is also a key member of the West African Human Rights Defenders Network.
